”Gays are disgusting”

Content concerning sexual minorities makes some kids uncomfortable. We see this clearly on Momio, our social media service for kids, and started to wonder why.

Every week, several Momio users get insulted due to content – posted by other kids – where the word ”homosexual” is mentioned or a gay couple is kissing. For instance, tens of kids thought this picture shouldn’t be on Momio:

Here’s how the children argued:

”There are gays in the picture. 😠”

”There are two men kissing.”

”The picture is disgusting.”

”Not suitable for kids.”

”It’s against Momio rules.”

”Is this really ok on Momio? I don’t like it. Could you please remove this.”

”They are doing nasty stuff. I don’t want to see it here.”

”Disgusting content.”

The big question: Why?

It’s of course totally allowed to talk about sexual minorities on Momio and to post pictures like the one above. Why do some kids think it’s not ok? We talked about this in our international team of Community Managers and came up with these explanations.

  • Heterosexuality is the norm and young kids don’t necessarily know any homosexuals.
  • There aren’t too many TV shows or movies for kids that contain other than heterosexual love stories.
  • Kids easily adapt their parents’ values and opinions.

Can you think of other reasons?

ok lets make the 5 steps back problem solving rule… 1st step: kids are unhappy about homosexuality. Why? ->

2nd step: 95+% of them have been raised to believe man and woman fits together. Why?

3rd step: Growing up with a mom and a dad kissing and hugging paints a picture on how things work on an unconscious level? but when they talk about sexuality early on, why dont heterosexual parents inform they small boys that its ok to be with another man?

4th step: Parents want their kids to be happy. No matter what. In some cases. why do they still raise their kids the old fasion way besides what they feel inside?

5th step: does the community we live in, make homosexuals happy? – I strongly believe as a heterosexual father to two sons that we should look at how the world sees homosexuality all in all – because no parent want their kids mental ability to ignore social status, to be testet in any way. regardless of what we deeply believe our selfs.

by the way numbers suggest that boys living with single moms are more likely to be homosexuals than boys who are raised with a farther (I can only guess: “heterosexual father”) why is a father figure so important for what the child believes ? is it the picture that is painted unconsciously, by the interaction between parents ? or are women more openminded ?

Thank you for your thorough comment, Philip! We agree: The problem also lies in what parents DON’T say. If heterosexual parents don’t have gay friends, they might not even think of telling about homosexuality to their kids.

Ja het is best vies dat homoseksuele maar ja ik vind dat niet op momio mag want er zitten ook kleine kinderen op dus verwijderd het van momio

    Translated in English by watAgame:

“Yeah it’s pretty disgusting this gay thing, but I don’t think it should be allowed on Momio, because there are a lot of small kids as well, so it should be deleted.”

Thanks for your comment, Yasmina! We have to disagree with you. On Momio, everybody respects each other no matter what their origin, religion or sexual orientation is. Therefore we will allow content regarding sexual minorities in the future, too.

    A comment sent by email:
Homo’s zijn niet vies, het is noormaal, als een jongen op een ander jongen is, normaal toch!??

    Translated in English by watAgame:
Homos aren’t dirty, it is normal if a guy is in love with another guy, isn’t it!??

…I’m laughing so hard, seriously. Homosexuality is a part of life, and don’t people ever consider that maybe, just maybe, some gay people are a bit grossed out by pictures of straight people kissing? Honestly? Ew. But we scroll past them, instead of freaking out and reporting them.

Okay, first of, that pic was adorable. Second I feel like people should teach their children the fact that homosexual is an option for them! As long as their not hurting anyone, they should be allowed to follow their own path in life.
