Content concerning sexual minorities makes some kids uncomfortable. We see this clearly on Momio, our social media service for kids, and started to wonder why.
Every week, several Momio users get insulted due to content – posted by other kids – where the word ”homosexual” is mentioned or a gay couple is kissing. For instance, tens of kids thought this picture shouldn’t be on Momio:
Here’s how the children argued:
”There are gays in the picture. 😠”
”There are two men kissing.”
”The picture is disgusting.”
”Not suitable for kids.”
”It’s against Momio rules.”
”Is this really ok on Momio? I don’t like it. Could you please remove this.”
”They are doing nasty stuff. I don’t want to see it here.”
The big question: Why?
It’s of course totally allowed to talk about sexual minorities on Momio and to post pictures like the one above. Why do some kids think it’s not ok? We talked about this in our international team of Community Managers and came up with these explanations.
- Heterosexuality is the norm and young kids don’t necessarily know any homosexuals.
- There aren’t too many TV shows or movies for kids that contain other than heterosexual love stories.
- Kids easily adapt their parents’ values and opinions.
Can you think of other reasons?
