“I’m creating an edit!”

Edits made by: Diamondx from Momio Finland, pep and SophieSweet from Momio Norway, Moimo2005 from Momio Sweden.

On Momio, we have a whole community of kids that, honestly, are superpro editors! They spend hours on their phones, tablets and web, trying to create the perfect lines, the perfect reflections in an image, the combination of colours and captions that goes to the final “product”.

It’s easy, even for beginners, to download your avatar from Momio. You have to dress it the way you like, go to your profile and click “download” – your avatar image gets downloaded to your hard-drive, so you can use it in all apps and programs for editing. At first many kids try it out with just putting the avatar on a pretty background. But the “pros” want to do more complex things.

They spend hours upon hours editing the avatar’s face, arms, legs, bodies and surroundings. They only use the avatar as a base, and thereafter they add layers, twists and turns, until they’re satisfied with the edit as a whole. Finally they post it, and share their creation with the rest of the community using #edit or #MomioEdit.

We asked momios: “What is the best thing about creating Momio edits? How do you do it?” As an adult, it might be hard to understand why someone would put in so much work and effort into something that they don’t get awarded for. There is no one setting a grade, no one else is paying for the hours you put in. So why? Here are some of the responses we got:

“When I make edits I can express how I feel and share new creative ideas!”

“It’s fun to come up with new ideas! I have many ideas and I can express them with my edits!”

“It’s fun and you get to meet so many talented momios and friends through creating edits!”

“It’s fun to improve yourself and to be proud of what you’ve made!”

“I love to look at my own and others progress!”

“It’s so much fun and I love the Momio avatar, it’s easy to work with! And it turns out really beautiful!”

“I love how happy my edits make others!”

Momio editors are a community. This is like their own personal project and they love to share it with other like-minded kids who share the same passion for details. They share tips, tricks, inspiration – and they get inspired and motivated by each other’s improvements. If we put on our grown-up glasses, we can also say that they’re building their portfolio. Maybe for a job later on?

It wouldn’t surprise me if many of these kids go on to have a career as designers or artists later on in life. All they needed was a platform and a community where they could learn to grow – while having fun! But the thing is, even if they don’t end up with a creative profession, they would still have learned something truly meaningful. They have learned how to put their time and effort into a project, and they’ve seen the results. They’ve learned that we can truly learn everything we want – and that progress is based on what you put into it. And isn’t that a good learning in life, no matter what profession you end up with?
