We launched hashtags on Momio March 16, 2015. While a lot of kids were asking for them, some had no idea what they were. It took less than a day for most of them to figure out what they are, which is a great example of kids ability to learn new things in a heartbeat.
Basically hashtags are search terms. When you click a hashtag it shows you other posts using the same hashtag. Twitter was the first service to make them popular, followed by Instagram, Facebook and lots of others.
Hashtags unite people
Hashtags are especially useful when following a certain event or a tv show. During big sports events or shows like Eurovision or X Factor final social media is buzzing with posts on the same topic. It can be a lot of fun to follow what others are saying and join the conversation.
The collectiveness is also why we wanted to have hashtags on Momio. Big events apart, hashtags also help to find people with the similar interests. Now our users can easily find the posts that are about the topics that truly interest them. #5SOS will bring all the 5 Seconds of Summer fans together, and #football will unite those into football.
